Listen to Obituary

Joseph Charles “Joe” Gross of Baltimore, MD, passed away on July 27, 2026, after a brief illness. He was born on June 18, 1936, to Raymond A. and Katherine Krabbe Gross. Joe’s life was defined by his unwavering love for his family, his faith and his friends. Joe was a loving and devoted son and brother, caring for family members in their illnesses. Joe loved the Lord. His Catholic faith was very important to him; he loved going to Mass, and he served as an usher at St. Benedict’s for decades.

In addition to his faith and family, Joe loved music. He was a professional drummer and played with several bands locally for many years. He was also the studio drummer for most of Baltimore’s Wedge Records label recordings in the 1960’s. Joe wrote and recorded music too. His 1965 single, “The Rub,” featured an extended drum solo, described as “ahead of its time” by the Baltimore Entertainment Archive. Joe was very proud of that, and his other recordings.

Joe was predeceased by his beloved parents, his brother Raymond and his sister Kathy. He is survived by two nieces, many cousins and his best friend Moe, whom Joe loved like a son. Joe was kind, generous and loyal – he will be missed very much.

A funeral Mass celebrating Joe’s life and faith will be held on Wednesday, August 5th at 10am at Our Lady of Victory, 4414 Wilkins Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21229. Interment will be in the fall.
