Herbert Spittel, 95, of Chincoteague, Virginia, and formerly of Randallstown, Maryland, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2025. Born on January 11, 1930, in Baltimore, Maryland, Herbert lived a long and devoted life marked by family, faith, service, and community involvement.
A proud graduate of the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1948, Herbert went on to complete his training as a journeyman electrician at the Samuel Gompers General Vocational School in 1954. From 1951 to 1953, Herbert served his country honorably as a Corporal in the United States Army Military Police at Fort Hood, Texas. His sense of duty and discipline carried through every aspect of his life.
He dedicated four decades of his professional life to Herbert Electric Company of Baltimore, where he built a reputation for skill and reliability. Even after retirement, he remained active in the workforce as a part-time driver for P.A.P.A. Auto Parts of Baltimore.
Herbert was deeply rooted in his faith. A lifelong member of Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church of Catonsville, Maryland, he was baptized and confirmed there when the congregation was located on Edmonson Avenue in Baltimore. He served faithfully as an usher, elder, and President of the Walther League. After the church relocated to Catonsville, he continued his steadfast attendance alongside his family. He found joy in Sunday School and Adult Bible Classes and took great interest in studying the Holy Bible. His commitment to faith extended into his family life as he encouraged his son’s calling to the Holy Ministry.
Beyond church walls, Herb was an active participant in numerous community organizations. He bowled with the Emmanuel Lutheran Bowling League and was a member of the Liberty Road Fish and Game Club. He coached youth soccer at Liberty Road Recreation and held leadership roles as Club President for both the Calico Squares and Spinning Wheels Square Dancing Clubs. In addition to these activities, he volunteered at Augsburg Lutheran Home of Baltimore—further evidence of his generous spirit and dedication to service.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Herb was a season ticket holder for the Baltimore Colts and cherished cheering them, the Ravens, and the Orioles through many seasons.
Herbert’s legacy lives on through his loving family: his son Douglas Spittel (Leigh) of Chincoteague, Virginia; grandchildren Kirsten Spittel-Sloan (Stuart) of Seattle, Washington; Justin Spittel (Hannah) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Hanna Marcheski (Vincent) of Dallas, Texas; Daniel Spittel (Courtney) of Cincinnati, Ohio; and great-grandson Cameron Sloan of Seattle.
He now joins his beloved wife, Kathryn, and his parents, George and Charlotte Spittel, to await the resurrection in Jesus, along with his siblings, George, Margaret, Walter, Catherine, Lester, Roland, Vernon, Doris, and Eleanor.
Herbert’s life was one defined by conviction and principle—a man who led by example through faithfulness to Jesus Christ, devotion to family, and community service. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as an enduring testament to a life well lived.
