August 29, 1932 — April 29, 2023

Emblem

Evelyn Marie Galvin, 90, passed away peacefully on the morning of April 29th, surrounded by her family. Evelyn was born and raised in Baltimore City. The oldest of four, Evelyn grew up in a poor working-class family during the depression. This had a significant impact on who she became and how she lived her life; she was quite thrifty and was able to do a lot with a little.

Evelyn married Eugene “Gene” Galvin and together they raised five boys, Bill, Richard, Barry, Michael and Paul. They shared over 50 years of marriage together before Gene’s passing. Evelyn and Gene moved their family to the Relay area in the 1950s, where Evelyn was heavily involved in the community. She was involved in the parent teacher organizations while her children were growing up and was a substitute teacher. Evelyn started out as a member of the Relay Presbyterian Church, which became Hope Presbyterian Church. She was a long-time and very involved member of Hope Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a church elder.

Evelyn worked for many years at the University of Maryland, doing research in the hypertension unit to improve public health.

Evelyn was a caretaker; in addition to raising her five boys, she acquired many “adopted” children and grandchildren throughout her life. She was kind and thoughtful, and always went out of her way to support others. Her home was always open. It was not an uncommon sight to find friends and family stopping by all the time. Evelyn loved holidays and always went above and beyond to make them special for her family and friends.

Evelyn was affectionately known by many names, including Lion Grandma, Mimi, Great, and Mom. She leaves behind children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and many “adopted” family members and friends. She was a truly special and loving person who will be missed by many.

A visitation will be held at Ambrose Funeral Home, 1328 Sulphur Spring Road, Halethorpe MD 21227 on Thursday from 3-5pm and 7-9pm.
