Derek “Red Beard” Volkmer

Derek “Red Beard” Volkmer passed away on September 3, 2026, in Virginia. He was born on July 4, 1986, in Baltimore, Maryland. Derek will be remembered with deep love as a devoted family man, a proud veteran, and someone whose humor and spirit brought laughter to those around him.

Derek loved his country, a devotion that felt especially fitting for someone born on Independence Day. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Iraq from 2005 to 2009 with the 101st Airborne. He was honorably discharged from military service and also took part in the Egypt peace mission connected to the Camp David peace treaty. His service reflected both commitment and courage, and it remained an important part of who he was.

Outside of his military service, Derek enjoyed hunting and shooting guns. He was also known as the funniest guy in the room, someone who always had people laughing and who carried a lively presence that others were naturally drawn to. Above all else, he loved his family. His children and fiancée were at the center of his heart, and he loved them more than anything in this world.

He is survived by his mother, Toni Wroten; his beloved fiancée, Jennifer Cousins, Derek was very devoted to building his life with her over the last 12 years for their family; and their children, Jaelyn Volkmer and Jaxon Volkmer. He is also survived by his sisters, Colleen Duffy and Demi Hartman, and by his grandmother, Darlene Rose. Each of them shared in Derek’s life in a special way and will carry his memory forward with enduring love.

Derek was preceded in death by his father, William Volkmer and grandparents, Barbara Walker and Everette Wroten, Sr.

Those who knew Derek will remember his patriotism, his laughter, his strength, and the love he gave so freely to his family. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who loved him.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday at Ambrose Funeral Home, 1328 Sulphur Spring Rd, on Wednesday from 3-5pm and 7-9pm. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made directly to the funeral home to offset funeral expenses.
